CANADA:

Alberta:

F1, F2 and F3 generation are illegal to own in Alberta. Only F4, etc are legal to own in Alberta.
(these are mixed breeds) and the generation of the animal.

Ones that we may allow a person to possess: such as a registered generation F4 Savannah cat, still couldn’t actually be imported into Canada. If you check with the Federal Government first, then you can find out what can be brought into Canada. If the animal is already in Canada, then you can inquire with a District SRD Fish and Wildlife Office. For a list of SRD Offices you can visit our department web site address at: http://srd.alberta.ca/fieldoffices/default.aspx
Alberta's Wildlife Regulation lists animals as controlled animals. It is unlawful to possess a controlled animal in Alberta without proper authority. Authority to possess controlled animals in Alberta is occasionally granted to zoos for example but not to persons to keep such animals as pets. The list of controlled animals can be viewed in Schedule 5 of Alberta's Wildlife Regulation Under the Queens Printer web site at http://www.qp.gov.ab.ca/custom_page.cfm?page_id=6 Under the sub link List Regulations go to the link on Wildlife Regulations and go to Schedule 5 you will find a list of controlled animals.

British Columbia:

Restricts certain exotics but not hybrids: http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/wildlifeactreview/cas/species.html

EUROPE:

In order to import to Europe CITES import and export permits are required for F1 - F4 hybrids. From F5 on no CITES is needed, instead a TICA 5 generation pedigree to prove the cat is 5 generations removed from the wild cat. There are different regulations in each country for keeping hybrids.

Austria: no restrictions on F2 and later generations.

Belgium: no restrictions on F2 and later generations.

Czech Republic: no restrictions on F2 and later generations.

Denmark: no restrictions on F2 and later generations.

Finland: no restrictions on F2 and later generations.

France: no restrictions on F2 and later generations.

Hungary: no restrictions on F2 and later generations.

Italy: no restrictions on F2 and later generations.

Lithuania: no restrictions on F2 and later generations.

Netherlands: no restrictions on F2 and later generations.

Norway: F1 - F4 hybrids banned, F5 and later gen. allowed, but either need to put into a 4 month quarantine or vaccinated at 3 months against rabies, keep the kitten 4 months, do a rabies titer test and then the kitten can be shipped without quarantine.

Poland: no restrictions on F2 and later generations.

Portugal: no restrictions on F2 and later generations.

Spain: no restrictions on F2 and later generations.

Sweden: F1 - F4 hybrids banned, F5 and later gen. allowed, but either need to put into a 4 month quarantine or vaccinated at 3 months against rabies, keep the kitten 4 months, do a rabies titer test and then the kitten can be shipped without quarantine.

Switzerland: F1 and F2 special permits including large outside enclosure. Netherlands: In most provinces restrictions to import F1, for example needing permit and outside enclosure.

UK:  Pet Travel Scheme is available for F2 and later generations. Hybrids have to go into a 6 month quarantine; for F1 a wild cat license is required. See: http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine/PETS/dangerousdogs.htm

NEW ZEALAND:

Currently the only hybrid that is allowed into New Zealand is Bengal cats which was allowed in in the early 1990s before the current legislation came into force. The current legislation requires a risk assessment to be conducted and it is highly unlikely that and new hybrid cats, eg Savannah or Chausie, would be approved unless you had evidence that they were already present in New Zealand before 1998. At this stage even 5th generation backcrosses, as in the Australian example, are not permitted entry however we will be reviewing this policy in the near future.

The reason we do not allow these animals in is that cats, along with many other animals, have caused a large reduction in native wildlife and we are concerned that hybrids might be worse than what we already have. See: http://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/imports/animals/standards/domaniic.spe.htm
